This interview with Henry Fuqua, Jr., deals with his family background, living in Baton Rouge, the Flood of 1912, his educational background, and his father. Henry Fuqua, Jr. discusses his father's work as head of the penitentiary in Baton Rouge (1916) and, later, Angola; Henry Fuqua, Sr.'s run for governor (1924); and Fuqua Sr.'s work with Louisiana State University, Southern University, road building, and railroads. Fuqua identifies photos of the sugar house and other buildings at Hope Farm in New Iberia; a hospital, cotton gin, and levees in the Atchafalaya swamp for the LSU Libraries Louisiana and Lower Mississippi Valley Collections; and discusses the old governor's mansion and his father's defeat of Huey Long. Henry L. Fuqua Sr. served as general manager of the Louisiana State Penitentiary (1916-1923) and governor of Louisiana (1924-1926). Henry L. Fuqua, Jr. was the son of Henry L. Fuqua, Sr. (1865-1926) and Laura Matta Fuqua (1866-1968). He attended the University Demonstration School in Baton Rouge, graduating in 1924, and attended LSU 1925-1927. He served in the Pacific theater in World War II and returned to Baton Rouge in 1947.
